Online Poker Explained

This is another card game where player bet on the value of the card combinations they have in their hand and placing bets into a central pot. The person that holds the cards that have the highest value according to an established ranking system wins or instead the player that remains with his hand when the other players have folded wins. At casinos the dealer handles the cards for each hand and a button is rotated among the players to depict nominated dealers that determine the order of betting. Dealers shuffle the cards and a player to his right cuts then the dealer deals cards to players one at a time. Players' hands change between rounds by being dealt additional cards or replacing cards that would have been previously dealt.

The end of each round is shown by all bets being gathered into the central pot. If a player bets and no opponents call but fold instead the player wins the pot and no showing of cards is needed and the next round begins. After the last betting round, if there still remains more than one player a showdown occurs and here the players have to reveal their hidden cards and hands are evaluated. The player with the best hand according to the set rankings wins the pot.

Normally a hand of poker has five cards. The first bet made opens the round other players may call or raise the bets. Calling a bet is to match a bet or a raise. The round can only end when active players have bet equal amounts and no player calls or raises. A check happens when no player has opened the betting round, checking means that the player wishes not to open the round but wants to keep his/her cards and be able to call or raise later in the same round if another player opens. A raise is when a player increases the size of the bet required to stay in the pot thus forcing all the other players to call the new amount. According to the standard poker rules it is required that raises must at least equal the amount in the previous bet. Folding is when a player discards his/her hand and gives up interest in the pot.
